Obituary Comdt Tim McFadden (Retd) – 22 February 2026

With sadness we inform members of the death on 22 Feb 2026 of Comdt Timothy J (Tim) McFadden (Retd), Dún Laoghaire, Co Dublin and formerly of Currahubbach, Co Sligo and late of MP Corps. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. Dearly beloved husband and best friend of Eleanor. Adored dad of Bevin, Sally-Anne and Fergus, and loving grandad of his precious Enda, Gráinne, Etaoin, Freddy, Mabel, Alfie and Georgia. Sadly and lovingly missed by his family, his daughter-in-law Rebecca, sons-in-law Richard and Frank, his extended family, friends and former comrades.
Funeral Mass will be held at 1100 on Wednesday 25 Feb at St Brigid’s Church, Curragh Camp, Co Kildare (R56 H317), followed by private family cremation on Thursday 26 Feb. No flowers please. Donations, if desired, to the Irish Heart Foundation. He joined the Defence Forces as a Cadet with 48 Cadet Class in Oct and he was commissioned in Sep 1974. He served in Comd in GTD, 3 Inf Bn, Dep MPC and Mil Detn Bcks. He served overseas with 2 HQ Coy, UNIFIL MP Coy from Apr to Oct 1979. He was an observer with the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG) from Apr 1989 to Mar 1990 in Namibia and he served on the Golan Heights with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) in 1995 – 96.
After retiring from the Defence Forces, he set up the UN Detention Facility for Hutu prisoners in Arusha, Tanzania established under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. In 1997 he was appointed as Governor of the UN Detention Unit in Scheveningen, near The Hague where detainees arraigned on charges of alleged war crimes committed during the war in the former Yugoslavia were detained, he retired from this position in 2009.

Reposing at the Coburg Street Funeral Home of Jerh. O’Connor Ltd. on Tuesday (February 24th) from 3.30pm to 4.30pm followed by cremation service at 6.00pm at The Island Crematorium, Rocky Island, Ringaskiddy, Co. Cork.

He joined the Defence Forces in 1981 and did his training in Murphy Bks Ballincollig, he was assigned to the S & T Corps in Collins Bks Cork, he served several times overseas with UNIFIL.

He passed away peacefully in the Oak Ward University Hospital Waterford. He will be sadly missed by his sister Mary, brother-in-law James, nieces, nephews, especially his niece Debbie and her husband John, extended family, neighbours, friends and former comrades.
Reposing in Ryan’s Funeral Home, Wellingtonbridge (Y35 RP21) on Thursday 19 Feb from 1600 to 1900. Funeral mass was celebrated 20 Feb 2026, at St. Aidan’s Church, Clongeen, followed by burial in the new cemetery, Clongeen.

He passed away peacefully, in the wonderful care of Talbot Lodge Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family. Sean, beloved husband of the late Annette and much loved father of Jackie, John, Paul and Brian. Predeceased by his brothers Eamon, Bill, Tom and Paddy. He will be sadly missed by his family, sisters Betty, Maureen and Ann, son-in-law Eamonn, daughters-in-law Rosemary and Michelle, grandchildren David, Stephen, Eoin, Adam, Conor, Killian, Blathnait, Caoimhe and also Emily and Thomas and their mother Radka, and new arrival, great-granddaughter Croía, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, neighbours and former comrades.
Requiem Mass was celebrated 18 Feb 2026 in St John Vianney Church, Ardlea Road. . Cremation thereafter in Dardistown Crematorium.

Reposing at his home (10 Sarsfield Square | N37 W627) on Tuesday from 1500 until 1900, house private outside these hours. Requiem Mass on Wednesday in St Mary’s Church at 1030 followed by burial afterwards in Coosan Cemetery. The family greatly appreciates your sympathy and support at this very difficult time.
He served in the Republic of the Congo with A Coy 35 Inf Bn from Jun to Dec 1961 and he fought at the siege at Jadotville in Sep 1961, he served twice in Cyprus, with A Coy 3 Inf Gp from Jul 1964 to Jan 1965 and with A Coy 6 Inf Bn from Apt to Oct 1966.

He passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving family and in the tender and exceptional care of the staff at St. Catherine’s Ward, Marymount University Hospital and Hospice, Dearly beloved husband of the late Mary, loving father of Damian, Wayne and Michelle and the late babies Margaret, Thomas and Michelle, devoted granda of Ross, Abbie and Alana, dearest brother of the late Mary, Agnes, Margaret and Patrick and father-in-law of Mícheál Barry, Wayne’s partner Nataliia and the late Caroline Gray. Sadly missed by his loving family, brothers Thomas, Jessie, Davy, Jerry, Richie, Michael and Vinnie, sisters Theresa, Fran, Bernie, Tina and Paula, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.

With sadness we inform members of the death on 7 Feb 2026 of Lieut Col James (Jim) Dawson (Retd), South Circular Rd, Limerick, formerly Bishopstown, Cork and Cappa, Kilrush, Co Clare and late of Arty Corps. He passed away peacefully and unexpectedly, at Áras Chois Fharraige, An Spidéal, in his hundredth year. Beloved husband of the late Nellie and the late Margaret (Peggie). Sadly missed by his sons Tony, Niall and Denis. Mourned by his loving daughters-in-law Liz and Muriel (Higgins), sisters Patricia (Lane), Enda (Jansen-Dawson) and Sister Clare Dawson, C.P., grandchildren Sophia, Ciaran, Thomas, Emily and David, brother-in-law Joe (Carmody), sisters-in-law Colette (Nix) and Laurie (Kelleher), nephews, nieces, extended family, Defence Forces comrades and friends. Pre-deceased by his sisters Goldie (Afford), Assumpta (Young) and brother Colonel Leo.
Funeral Mass was celebrated on 10 Feb in Saint Senan’s Church Kilrush, County Clare, followed by burial in New Shanakyle Cemetery.
He was born in Callan, Co Kilkenny in Apr 1926. He joined the Defence Forces as a Cdt with 20 Cdt Class in Nov 1946 and he was commissioned into the Arty Corps in 11 Nov 1948. He served in 2 Fd Arty Regt, 1 Fd Arty Regt, Coastal Def Arty, HQ 1 Bde, 23 Inf Bn FCA and HQ S Comd. He retired in 1986.
He was a brother of the late Col Leo Dawson (Retd) a former D Cav and uncle to Lieut Col James Dawson (Retd) and Col Michael Dawson (Retd).
He served in the Congo with 1 Inf Gp from May to Nov 1961 and also in Cyprus at HQ UNFICYP from 1965 to 1966.

He passed away peacefully in the loving care of the staff at Blackrock Clinic. Beloved husband of Audrey, much-loved father of Nicola, Ben, Alison and Sean and a devoted grandfather of Sam, Roxi, Conor, Holly, Olivia and Alex (Aki); Predeceased by his first wife Joyce, Mother Mary, father Noel and brother John. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, daughters, son, stepson, grandchildren, sons-in-law Pete and Tom, daughters-in-law Gosia and Ami, brother Breffni, sisters Aileen, Jacinta and Michele, mother-in-law Teresa, brothers-inlaw, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and his DF comrades.

He joined the DF as a Cdt with 52 Cdt Class in Nov 1975 and he was commissioned in 6 Decr 1976.
He completed two tours of duty with UNIFIL, with 49 Inf Bn from May to Oct 1981 and with 72 Inf Bn from Nov 1992 to Apr 1993.

With sadness we inform members of the death on 4 Feb 2026 of Capt Patrick Nolan, Boreenmanna Rd, formerly of Shandon St Cork City and late of of the band of S Comd, Collins Bks. He passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully at the Cork University Hospital. Beloved brother of Seán (John), loving brother-in-law of Helen, adored uncle of Caroline. Sadly missed by his loving family, grandnieces Anna and Éabha, grandnephew James, Caroline’s husband Bryan, relatives, neighbours and friends especially Eric, Bene and Ben.
Funeral Service was held on 7 Feb from 1000 followed by Burial afterwards to St Finbarr’s Cemetery.
He enlisted at ASM and he served as a Bandsman, on completion a Bachelor of Music degree, he was commissioned and appointed as a conductor.

Patrick (Joseph) Hanly, -, Dublin 7 and formerly Terenure. Passed away peacefully, after a short illness on 29th January 2026, surrounded by his loving family in the tender care of the staff in the Mater Hospital.
Patrick will be very sadly missed and remembered always by his beloved wife Rose, sons and daughter Geoff, Jenny, Matt and Gav, grandchildren Saoirse, Aaron, Kara, Lucy, Sophie, Emily, Noah, Erin and Molly, brother Joe, sisters Wino, Helen, Nanny and May, daughter-in-law Alina, Geoff’s partner Katie, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and friends.

With sadness we inform members of the death on 27 Jan 2026 of Capt Patrick J. Kilgannon (Retd) Newbridge, Co Kildare and late of 1 AA Regt, Arty Corps, Magee Bks, Kildare. He passed away peacefully in the excellent care of St Brigid’s Hospice, Curragh, Kildare – 27 January 2026. He was predeceased by his wife Jean and John and Mary his brother and sister. Missed now by Carol, Jerry, Mary, Ann and David, grandchildren Molly, Troy, Ruth and Jane, and brother and sister Chris and Breege and all his nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.
He enlisted as a trainee fitter armourer with the first platoon at AAS, Devoy Bks Naas in 1956 and he was assigned to 4 Grn Ord Coy in 1959. He served as a Sgt with A Coy 42 Inf Bn in Cyprus from Apr to Sep 1965. He was selected as a student on 3 Pot Officers Course and he commissioned on 14 June 1976. He served at Magee Barracks Kildare.
A service for friends and family to remember Pat was held on 30 January 2026, followed by interment afterwards in St. Conleth’s Cemetery, Newbridge.

With sadness we inform members of the death on 10 Jan 2026 of Sgt Robert (Bob) Fleming, Somerville, Tramore, Co. Waterford and late of 2 Cav Sqn. Bob passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family in the Mater Hospital, Dublin, following a short illness. Bob will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his heartbroken wife Rita and his sons Robert, Paul and Alan; his daughters in law Lisa, Mandy and Chloe; his loving and much loved grandchildren Megan, Zoe, Josh, Mia, Erin and Sophie. Bob will be fondly remembered by his brothers and sisters, all his nieces and nephews; his in -laws; his extended family, relatives, wonderful, and many many friends. The Fleming family would like to thank with great appreciation all the staff in the ICU in the Mater Hospital for the great care Bob received during his time there.
Requiem Mass took place on the 16 Jan 2026 in The Church of the Holy Cross, Tramore and was laid to rest in St. Declans Cemetery, Tramore.
He enlisted in the Defence Forces on 05 December 1979 and he served 21 years in 2 Cav Sqn until his retirement on 04th December 2000. He completed two tours of duty with UNIFIL in 1982 and in 1998.

Beloved husband of the late Esther, loving father of Rosemary, Pat, Yvonne and the late Bernadette, cherished grandad Paddy to Suzanne, Laura-Michelle and Wendy and great-grandad to Kyla, Megan, Ethan and Amelia and father-in-law of the late Geri. Sadly missed by his loving family, sons-in-law Don and Robert, brother Richard, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Requiem Mass was celebrated in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arbour Hill Garrison Chapel on 14 Jan 2026, followed by burial at Dardistown Cemetery.
Paddy was born on 25 Jul 1927 and he joined the army in Aug 1949. On completion of his three star training he was assigned to the Arty Sch, later he transferred to 2 FA Regt. He served in the Congo at HQ ONUC in Leopoldville in 1963. He served as a Sgt in the Office of D Arty until his retirement in 1971.

He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Doreen and much loved father to John, Philip, Conor and Keith. Philip will be sadly missed and forever remembered by his sons, daughters in law Lynn, Asha, Christine and Hilda, his nine grandchildren Damon, Kieran, Arun, Tia, Sam, Ryan, Zena, Keenan and Vala, great grandson Christopher, brothers James and Tom, sisters in law Helen, Margaret and Rita, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and colleagues in IUNVA Post 1 Arbour Hill.
Requiem Mass was celebrated in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Clondalkin on 14 Jan 2026, followed by burial in Newlands Cross Cemetery.
He was commissioned into the Engineer Corps in 1965 and he served in Dep Engrs. He served in Cyprus in the rank of Lieut with 9 Inf Gp as Engr Offr from Sep 1968 to Mar 1968.
