Obituary Former Sgt Bob Fleming – 10 January 2026

With sadness we inform members of the death on 10 Jan 2026 of Sgt Robert (Bob) Fleming, Somerville, Tramore, Co. Waterford and late of 2 Cav Sqn.  Bob passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family in the Mater Hospital, Dublin, following a short illness. Bob will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his heartbroken wife Rita and his sons Robert, Paul and Alan; his daughters in law Lisa, Mandy and Chloe; his loving and much loved grandchildren Megan, Zoe, Josh, Mia, Erin and Sophie. Bob will be fondly remembered by his brothers and sisters, all his nieces and nephews; his in -laws; his extended family, relatives, wonderful, and many many friends. The Fleming family would like to thank with great appreciation all the staff in the ICU in the Mater Hospital for the great care Bob received during his time there.  

Bob will be reposing at his residence (X91 PK25) on Thursday 15 Jan from 1600 until 1900, house Private please outside of reposal times.  Bob’s Requiem Mass will take place on Friday the 16 Jan at 1000 in The Church of the Holy Cross, Tramore. Immediately afterwards, Bob will be laid to rest in St. Declans Cemetery, Tramore. Family flowers only please, donations, if desired, to the Mater Foundation.  Sgt Fleming enlisted in the Defence Forces on 05 December 1979 and he served  21 years in 2 Cav Sqn until his retirement on 04th December 2000.  He completed two tours of duty with UNIFIL in 1982 and in 1998.

Obituary Post 1 member Former Sgt Paddy Hughes – 08 January 2026

With sadness we inform members of the death on 8 Jan 2026 of Post 1 member former Sgt Patrick (Paddy) Hughes (Retd), Dublin 1 and Blackhall Place, An Post Sheriff St and late of 2 FA Regt.  Beloved husband of the late Esther, loving father of Rosemary, Pat, Yvonne and the late Bernadette, cherished grandad Paddy to Suzanne, Laura-Michelle and Wendy and great-grandad to Kyla, Megan, Ethan and Amelia and father-in-law of the late Geri. Sadly missed by his loving family, sons-in-law Don and Robert, brother Richard, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Paddy will be reposing at the Fanagan Kirwan Funeral Home, Fairview Strand on Tuesday 13 Jan from 1700 to 1900, with family in attendance. Removal to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arbour Hill Garrison Chapel on Wednesday 14 Jan arriving at 1120 for 1130 Requiem Mass followed by burial at Dardistown Cemetery.

Paddy was born on 25 Jul 1927 and he joined the army in Aug 1949. On completion of his three star training he was assigned to the Arty Sch, later he transferred to 2 FA Regt. He served in the Congo at HQ ONUC in Leopoldville in 1963.  He served as a Sgt in the Office of  D Arty until his retirement in 1971.

Obituary Capt Philip Brunkard (Retd) – 11 January 2026

With sadness we inform members of the death on 11 Jan 2026 of Post 1 member Capt Philip Brunkard (Retd), Clondalkin, Dublin 22 and formerly Inchicore and late of the Corps of Engineers.  He passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Doreen and much loved father to John, Philip, Conor and Keith. Philip will be sadly missed and forever remembered by his sons, daughters in law Lynn, Asha, Christine and Hilda, his nine grandchildren Damon, Kieran, Arun, Tia, Sam, Ryan, Zena, Keenan and Vala, great grandson Christopher, brothers James and Tom, sisters in law Helen, Margaret and Rita, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and colleagues in IUNVA Post 1 Arbour Hill.

He will repose at Massey Brothers Funeral Home, Clondalkin Village, D22 EOCO on Tuesday, 13 Jan between 1700 and 1900. Removal to Church of the Immaculate Conception, Clondalkin in time for Requiem Mass on Wednesday, 14 Jan at 1100 followed by burial in Newlands Cross Cemetery.

He was commissioned into the Engineer Corps in 1965 and he served in Dep Engrs.  He served in Cyprus in the rank of Lieut with 9 Inf Gp as Engr Offr from Sep 1968 to Mar 1968.
