On 14 Mar 2008, Paul Fennelly from Lickowen, Castlehaven, Skibbereen, Co Cork died in the Intensive Care Unit at the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem after a short illness. At the time he had been serving as a civilian UN staff member with the Field Service as Supply Officer at HQ UNFICYP in Nicosia. He joined the UN on 5 Dec 1988 and served with UNTSO in Jerusalem, with UNIFIL in Naquora, MINURSO, in Layounne Western Sahara, UNPROFOR in Zagreb, the Field Administration and Logistics Division (FALD) in New York, UNMIK in Pristina Kosovo and in Cyprus with UNFICYP.

Paul Fennelly’s father, Eddie had served with the Field Service with UNTSO in Jerusalem where Paul was born.

Paul served in the Defence Forces, he was trained in 5 Inf Bn and served as a Cpl in HQ E Comd, he also served in UNIFIL.

He was married to Mary Groarke, who was Administrative Assistant to the Chief Administrative Officer, UNFICYP. She was an American citizen who was born to Irish parents and she and Paul met while serving in Western Sahara.
A private cremation was held at the Island Crematorium, Ringaskiddy, Co Cork on 22 Mar 2008.

He is survived by his wife Mary, parents Eileen and Eddie and his sisters Martina, Linda and Maura.
