This article recalls the killing of Pte Seán Rooney 14 Dec 2022 while he was serving with 121 Inf Bn UNIFIL, Lebanon.
Pte Seán Cormac Rooney (23) 121 Inf Bn UNIFIL was shot dead by armed elements near Al Aqbieh in Lebanon on 14 Dec 2022, three of his comrades were wounded in the attack. Seán joined the DF in Mar 2019, he served initially with 2 Cav Sqn and was posted to 27 Inf Bn before he deployed to UNIFIL for his second tour of duty as a peacekeeper. He was on his second tour of duty having served with 119 Inf Bn in 2021. A second soldier, Tpr Shane Kearney (22) from Killeagh, Co Cork required surgery after the attack.
Following Requiem Mass at the Church of The Holy Family, Dundalk, he was laid to rest in Newtowncunningham Cemetery, Co Donegal on 21 Dec 2022.
